And the livin’ is easy

Summertime,
And the livin’ is easy
Fish are jumpin’
And the cotton is high

No cotton or fish around here, but summertime is about to begin in earnest.  “School” is out Friday and Asa and I will be taking up residence in the neighborhood pool.  We have a great little pool here.  No lifeguards, just a key for the chain link and concertina wire fence, and a request to turn off the lights if you’re the last one out.  The little guy is on the cusp of being a full-fledged swimmer, and it feels like it’s time to brush off my ancient Red Cross swim instructor skills.  “Float like a jelly fish!”  I need that boy tired out in the way only pool time can tire a little kid out.
Before we get that far though, I have to come up with some beach themed item for Asa’s end-of-year party.  Each child has to buy something to put in the other childrens’ summer buckets.  We got an e-mail a few weeks ago asking us to decide what we’d bring so there wouldn’t be any duplicates.  “And please don’t spend more than a dollar per gift.”  A flurry of mom-mails followed.  “Princess will bring sunglasses.”  “Young Master Xavier will bring beach balls.”  “Chalk!  Contessa will bring chalk!”  I’m so close to boycotting this event.  “Sand.  Asa will bring sand.”  I’m as spendthrift as the next gal (Hi IAU Championships!), but spending money on bucketfuls of Dollar Store fare that our privileged children already own is not exciting.  And we have to send lots of e-mails about it?  That’s it, we’re donating the beach bucket.  I don’t know to whom, but we’re handing it over.  Am I being crazy here?  (And P.S.  How is chalk a beach item?)
Your daddy’s rich
And your mamma’s good lookin’
So hush little baby
Don’t you cry

One of these mornings
You’re going to rise up singing
Then you’ll spread your wings
And you’ll take to the sky

But till that morning
There’s a’nothing can harm you
With daddy and mamma standing by
